doing nothing is harder than doing something

Letting things fall into place or even fall apart before taking action can be one of the most difficult things to do. I am in that situation at the moment-and so far have resisted action. I realize that what I can do or want to do to alter the situation likely won’t have the intended result. Wanting to “do” something is culturally ingrained in us it seems. At least then we can say we “did our best” or “tried”. It might shield us from criticism or guilt. A wait and see approach is not highly valued these days. We are penalized for seemingly “doing nothing”.

An interesting study regarding soccer titled “Action bias among elite soccer goalkeepers: The case of penalty kicks” explores the emotional reactions to action vs. inaction.

While that might seem somewhat offtrack here, I makes me think of the differences between “instant indigo” and the fermentation vat. The fermentation vat gives me time to process the next move. To wait and see. To build upon what previously was. A chemical vat can be zapped back into action quickly while the fermentation vat needs time. Time to wait and see…

So while I let things fall apart a bit, I’ll be “doing something” out at the vats.

“Waiting for the right moment” what a complicated statement that is….Does it speak about our human nature to control events around us?
    May the impasse get resolved.

exactly so! i’m not so sure it is a “human nature” but it sure seems to be prevalent in today’s society- and more so American society these days. there is no perfect solution to this particular thing. but there will be an impasse, eventually.

It’s so hard to do nothing. I have made major mistakes when I intervened to (I thought) avert a situation but simply exacerbated it. I think it was simply arrogance on my part. Sometimes one’s best use is to be there to pick up the bits after the disintegration. Good luck. An interesting post, thank you, and I like the connection to the dye vat.

      yes!
to wait for the pieces to fall and notice the patterns even. life is like a broken china mosaic perhaps. taking the best of the broken bits and putting them together lovingly with beauty and grace.
      thank you isabella!

love the dancing art on clothes line…beautiful to watch pieces flip and sway…as for action vs non action – my current philosophical movement – this to shall pass, and does my action really enhance the possible outcome…I do and awful lot of ‘waiting and seeing” given my personal situation these dayz…as in all I can do now is ‘WAIT AND SEE”…
