Robert Rauschenberg 1925-2008

Talk about living a creative life! This guy gave artists permission to experiment wildly. His “combines” gave birth to “mixed media”. Painting, printmaking, theater, sculpture, and more- an artist who could shift media with ease. What a life!
There are so many things being written about him. I thought I’d share one of the ones I enjoyed. Feel free to share your favorite Rauschenberg story in the comments.

“To Rauschenberg, almost anything could be art, and art could be almost anything; he crossed media and created new ones as often as other artists clean their brushes.” -Jim Lewis, The Slate

He indeed was a great artist. I remember studying him and Joseph Beuys in college as very avant garde men. Definitely a rule breaker!
I’ve tagged you on my blog, if you care to play along!!

    Lorie-
when i was in college he was always held up as an example of someone to aspire to.
seems like there must have been something in the water at Black Mountain College back in the day. Another favorite artist of mine, Ruth Asawa studied there (among others).
sorry no time for a meme right now but thanks!
